Matt’s Wine of the Week 9/15

LUCCARELLI NEGROAMARO 2018
When deciding on my pick for this week I was thinking Italian red and just kept coming back to this Negroamaro from Puglia, Luccarelli. The heel of the boot is the area we are looking at and many say that it is one of Italy’s best kept secrets for value wines from the country. Sunbathed during the hot Italian summers and the earth is rich with iron over the top of calcareous rock that creates a perfect environment for the hearty Negroamaro grape. Loosely related to Sangiovese and Primitivo (Zinfandel) this wine is rich and mouth filling with dark chocolate notes, fig and pipe tobacco. Heavy looking in the glass but lighter on the palate, making this wine a great sipper or great pairing with a family style pasta dish and some massive meatballs!
