Kentucky Derby means Mint Julep Time!

The Kentucky Derby is fast approaching us and what better way to celebrate than by having a Mint Julep, the traditional drink served at Churchill downs during the race. During derby weekend over 100,000 of these will be served at the racetrack. Old Forester Mint Julep ready to serve cocktail has been used in modern times at the Kentucky Derby. This is an option that we carry but for the people who like to make their own the classic recipe calls for 2 cups of sugar, 2 cups of water, sprigs of fresh mint, crushed ice, and traditionally Old Forester Bourbon. First you want to make your own mint infused simple syrup which is relatively easy. All you need to do is boil 2 cups of water and 2 cups of sugar together for 5 minutes. Allow to cool and then place in a covered container with between 6 to 8 sprigs of fresh mint and refrigerate overnight. Fill a glass up with ice, add a tablespoon of your mint infused simple syrup, and two ounces of bourbon. Garnish with a sprig of mint. If you don’t have the time to make your own simple syrup you can buy pre-made simple syrup. The big difference would be to add  ½ oz simple syrup and 4-5 sprigs of mint to the bottom of your glass and muddle it together then add ice and bourbon and stir. Traditionally mint juleps are served in a mint julep cup or a high ball glass.

Thanks and Enjoy!
