Winter is the best time for comfort meals like stews and casseroles, and one of my favorite varietals for these types of meals is the very versatile Tempranillo grape. Jose Murua Villaverde founded Bodegas Muriel in 1926 and forged the traditions for the renowned Spanish winery, which his sons, Julian and Javier carry on today. My pick for this week is their Rioja Reserva 2015, 100% Tempranillo, and just beautiful! The ruby red coloring with brick overlays invite your nose to take in the bright fruits that mingle flawlessly with the 24 months of American and French barrel aging, bringing vanilla and spice to the party. This wine is refined and super clean with a long elegant mouthfeel. I have already asked my wife if we can make the hearty Shepard’s pie that we had a couple of weeks ago as this was the bottle of wine we would have loved with it. Cheers!
