Jamie’s Wine of The Week 01/08/20

Cabernet Franc seems to be all the rage lately. It’s unsurprising that so many people are discovering this rockstar variety due to its versatility and the consistent quality of wine that can be produced from the grape. Winemaker, Pierre Gauthier is the fifth generation to run this organically certified family winery just east of  Bourgeuil, in the Loire Valley of France. From his 18 hectares, Gauthier produces world-class, single vineyard Cab Franc. He only makes one entry-level cuvée called “Jour de Soif” and in my opinion, this wine is a true bargain in the category. Made from 20 year old Cab Franc vines and aged exclusively in stainless steel tanks, Jour de Soif emits aromas of cherry and blackberry with subtle notes of sweet smoke. The palate is full bodied and full of dark berry character with soft tannins, medium acidity, and a lingering finish. So, if you’re wondering what all the hype is about, this is an easy drinking introductory bottle into the world of Cabernet Franc.
