Vasse Felix’s chief winemaker, Virginia Willcock, is one of the finest and most awarded winemakers in Australia. During nearly 30 vintages as a winemaker in Western Australia she has masterfully honed her craft among the historic vineyards and unsullied environs of Vasse Felix’s estate. Her 2015 Filius Cabernet is a lesson in balance and complexity. The wine pours bright purple and shows pristine mid-weight blackcurrant fruit complimented by notes of sage, all enhanced by a range of savory spice provided via a small addition of Malbec. This vibrant red spends 12 months in 13% new French Oak. The resulting wine demonstrates that bigger does not always mean better, and linear styles of Cabernet can be gorgeous, especially when there is a master at work.
