Ska Euphoria Pale Ale 6.1% A.B.V. This last weekend a few friends and I made the long trip up to Durango, Colorado to hang out with our friends at Ska Brewing Company, and to make sure everyone was enjoying themselves at their anniversary party. I made sure to enjoy a Euphoria pale ale early on because I knew the closing hours of my night would be a bit of a blur, and of course it was just as delicious as last year. It's shimmering amber hue is complimented beautifullly by a light ring of white bubbles. The nose is complete with the aroma of fresh hops, grapefruit, and just a hint of vanilla and copper. Euphoria is crisp at first, but has a fat mid palate complete with the sticky flavor of hops and a finish that is citrusy with just a hint of booze. The party itself was euphoric. It was complete with the friendly staff of Ska, many other tasty micro brews, and some killer music. We got down, we partied hard, and we enjoyed some tasty beer. Take home part of the party and enthusiasm today. Great Divide Old Ruffian Barley Wine 10.2% A.B.V. Old Ruffian, by Great Divide brewing company out of Denver, Colorado, is an award winning beast that will certainly satisfy your beer craving, quench your thirst, and before you're done knock you off of your feet. This barley wine-style ale is one succulant brew, and it has the color and aroma to prove it. Old Ruffian is a beautifully hazy shade of amber with a lovely lacing of pearly white bubbles that cling ever so gently to the side of your glass. Wonderful aromas of cinnamon apples combine with the subtle twang of cherries but the lingering scent of caramel, malt, and hops hang around to stimulate the senses. At first this barley wine is wonderfully rich and creamy with the sweet flavor of caramel apples, but with a finish that boasts the bitter hoppyness of its 90 ibus. The label reads hefty and hoppy, and it is just that. Old Ruffian is big, rich, creamy, tasty, hoppy and balanced, but be sure you watch out for that 10.2% A.B.V. because it sneaks up on you. Russian River Consecration 10.00% A.B.V. I would consider Russian River to be one of the leading producers of sour ales in this country, and this week I'm going to use Consecration as my proof. This ale, aged in cabernet barrels with the addition of currants, creates an incredibly conplex brew. Consecration is a deep shade of ruby red with a very thin ring of tiny white bubbles. The nose is a wonderful combination of currants, oak, vanilla, alcohol, and the very pungent aroma of whild yeast. The palate is immediately overwhelmed with the flavor of tart red fruit, that gives way to the smooth texture of vanilla, and a finish that is complete with just a hint of cabernet and an almost bourbon alcohol burn in the back of the throat. Pleasantly tart, but balanced, this tatsty beverage is cellarable for up to three years. Make sure you enjoy it in the proper glassware and plan on giving your palate some time to recallibrate after you drink this sour beauty. Avery Old Jubilation Ale 8.3% A.B.V. Avery Old Jubilation Ale, yeah I know what you're thinking, dude its only September. Well, I don't care how early it is to be writing about a winter warmer, this stuff is unstoppable. I have to patiently wait for this stuff to drop every year, and now that I have it, so should you! Old Jubilation pours a rich mahogany with stunning ruby highlights and a slight layer of off white bubbles. The aroma is a pleasantly warm combination of nutmeg, dried fruits, and a just a hint of mocha. Old Jubilation refreshes the palate with the subtle zip of spices and finishes dry with a lingering nutty finish. The slight burn of alcohol warms the back of the throat and the middle of the chest but is surprisingly subtle for a beer that's 8.3%. Having a few will definitely help keep you warm when the days start to grow colder, which may not be for a while, but I'm not going to wait. Enjoy some now, hide some in the cellar, and stash a few cases to help you get by until next years release.
