Brasserie Dupont Posca Rustica

This week’s beer of the week features the Posca Rustica from the world renowned Brassiere Dupont of Belgium.  It can be very easy these days to get excited about the burgeoning Colorado craft beer industry that often relies on a heavy helping of hops.  However before the popularization of hops in beer, brewers utilized a mixture of herbs and spices to flavor and bitter their beers.  This mixture is called gruit and Dupont’s Posca Rustica is a classic example of the ancient brewing style.  The result is something that is neither overly bitter or malty, but zesty and full of life.  This is apparent from the spritzer like carbonation that remains until the last drop.  The beer exhibits a nice combination of spice and fermented fruit, but is not overbearing in either sense.  In fact, there is a subtle complexity to the ale that hints at an array of mouth feel and flavor.  If you like Belgian beers but have a difficult time relating to the overpowering fermented funk of the yeast strains, than this would be a good beer to sample.

Doug's beer of the week 7/18/12

July 18th, 2012 12:58pm - Posted By: Doug Andrus

With the Olympics fast approaching ‘across the pond’, we thought we’d introduce you to something that brings a little bit of the UK to us.  Doug took time this weekend to sample Odell’s new Pond Hopper Ale, a collaboration project between the Odell Brewing Company and the UK’s Thornbridge Brewery.  Here’s Doug’s first-ever beer write-up:

Pond Hopper

Double Extra Pale Ale

Have you tried it yet? Get it while you can! This project between Odell’s and Thornbridge is a hit in my mind!  A golden orange pour, with light carbonation (I love a little fizz). American hops dominate the beginning but are soon mellowed by rich English malts. Citrus and floral aromas, lead you through the slight tinge of alcohol. The taste of caramel at the end rounds this beer off beautifully!

Enjoy!

Pete's beer of the week 7/11/12

July 11th, 2012 10:10am - Posted By: Pete Messimer

This week we depart from our normal esoteric bantering about hoppy hops and golden tinted foam.  The mouth feel of this beer is simple—pucker with MARGARITA sour lime!

Budweiser recently introduced Bud Light Lime-A-Rita and it took off so quickly they can’t keep it on the shelves.  With the temperature rising again, we made sure we had enough to offer a special price on this hard to get beer.  The smaller 8 ounce cans guarantee that each sip will stay cold, even on the hottest of days!

Dave's beer of the week 7/4/12

July 4th, 2012 8:17am - Posted By: Dave Knaisch

Wookey Jack- Firestone Walker Brewing CO

What is the Wookey Jack? No, it is not a star wars inspired disco move- but the amazing
black rye IPA from Firestone and Walker. This beer pours a mahogony color with a light tan head. The Wookey Jack has aromas of roasted malts and herbal citrus. The spicy rye in this beer compliments the roasted coffee and hoppy taste. The mouthfeel is on the lighter side with a good carbonation. The Wookey Jack has a very complex palate but is still very well balanced. Overall this beer is perfect for IPA lovers who are looking for an exciting take on a great style. Bottoms Up!
