Cody's beer of the week 6/6/12

Odell Brewing Company St. Lupulin 6.5% A.B.V.

Extra pale ale, or extra delicious? How about both! This summer seasonal from the brilliant minds of Odell Brewing Company is exactly what you need after a long day at the office. This one pours a vibrant golden hue with an elegant halo of pearly white bubbles and excellent head retention. The nose is a lovely combination of floral, herbaceous, and citrus hops with just a hint of caramel. And even though the initial taste seems like it would be a palate wrecking hop-bomb, vibrant carbonation and a crisp finish, stop it from being just that. St. Lupulin is what I'm drinking this summer. What about you!? Cheers!

Avery Uncle Jacob's Stout 17.42% A.B.V.

Avery has done some crazy things over the years, from exclusive taproom offerings, to their annual releases, they do not disappoint. Uncle Jacob's Stout is truly amazing, and honestly, it's worth every penny. It pours like engine oil, and the nose is just as robust as the color. Milk chocolate immediately blesses the senses followed by the aroma of ginger snaps, oak, vanilla and cinnamon granola graham crackers with a brilliant alcohol zest. The mouth feel is pleasant with a velvety mid-palate and just enough booze to warm the nostrils as you exhale. Take your chances on this incredible imperial stout before it's too late. See you next year Uncle Jacob. Cheers!! - Cody

I find it amazing that Port Brewing is able to find the amount of hops to put into their Hop-15 each year, and now those crazy ale smiths are talking about upping their production of this monster brew. It pours a vibrant and cloudy shade of orange with the most overwhelming nose. The aroma of fresh hops is followed by caramel, citrus, and just a hint of pepper. Mikkeller Big Worse Barley-Wine 12.0% A.B.V.

This is the story of a man named Mikkell, a crazy, but passionate, home brewer, a gypsy, a genius. He has created some of the most unique brews and has collaborated with some of the best breweries around the world, and we get to enjoy his creations. The Big Worse Barley-Wine isn't as intimidating as it sounds, I promise you. It pours a brilliant combination of amber and ruby with amazing head retention. The nose is complex and satisfying with the aroma of freshly sliced granny smith apples, brown sugar, caramel toasted malts, cinnamon, and just a touch of alcohol. The mouth feel is decadent, with mild carbonation and a warm finish that leaves just a subtle burn in the back of the throat. Marble Brewery Double IPA 8.0% A.B.V.

It's time again to dust off your shooter marbles to take a shot at this weeks brew from Marble Brewery! Their double IPA is nothing short of delicious, and the evidence is apparent with each and every sip. It pours liquid gold, but as you close your eyes and take in the aroma, the vibrant greens of a freshly plucked hop cone fill the mind. Notes of honey, caramel, and citrus, beam brightly beneath a layer of hops and become increasingly intense as the beer warms up. The mouth feel is wonderfully sticky and the finish is vibrant and long. Well done Marble Brewery. Cheers! - Cody

Stone Russian Imperial Stout 10.5% A.B.V.

I sat for a while and thought about how I should start off this weeks beer review, and honestly, it took me a while to come up with this first sentence. But, as I sipped Stone's Russian Imperial Stout I thought to myself, man I love this beer! However, just as that thought ended I felt this sense of shame realizing that I had never had Stone's Russian Imperial Stout. I felt incredibly disappointed in myself for a moment and then I realized there are plenty of beers out there that I haven't tried and it isn't the end of the world. Anyway, it's time to put it all behind me and talk about the beer. This imperial monster is intense from start to finish. From the color to the aroma it takes quite a a bit of concentration to get through the whole thing. RIS pours a thick shade of jet black with robust aromas of anise, blackberry, dark chocolate, fig and just a touch of coffee. The mouth feel has incredible weight to it with just a zip of carbonation and a sticky finish. I struggled through this write up because this beer demanded my attention. I enjoyed it every step of the way. Do you have the patience? There's only one way to find out. Cheers! - Cody

Odell Brewing Company Shenanigans 9.1% A.B.V.

It has recently been brought to my attention that all of my beer shenanigans have been just a bit repetitive.. So, this week I will try to do my absolute best to bring my readers (if I have any, of course) something completely different. Here we go. Every so often, the brewing process doesn't quite work out the way brewers want it to. From infections to temperature, brewing is difficult, and if you can produce the beer that you had originally created on paper every time, you win. I'm not here to tell you that the brewers at Odell Brewing Company don't know what they're doing, because they most certainly do. I'm here to tell you that accidents happen, and that sometimes these accidents are beautiful. From Odell's Shenanigans, to my own, something amazing has happened. Odell has created a brilliant oak aged crimson ale, and I just so happen to be here to tell you about it. It truly is crimson in color, but the aroma is what sets it apart. The scent of rose petals is complimented beautifully by the aroma of cracked white pepper, dried orange peel, and lemon zest. The carbonation is vivid, bright, and prominent followed by a layer of acidity that dances its way to the back of the throat, and complete with a refreshing finish. I may be guilty of repeating the way I describe the brews I like to drink and the breweries I like to write about, but Odell Brewing Company has not repeated themselves with this one. Enjoy their Shenanigans from this Flanagan! Cheers!

Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti 9.5% A.B.V.

Now that the weather is warming up people tend to pick up six packs of lighter lagers and wheat beers forgetting all about one of my favorite styles of beer, the imperial stout. Of course, if you haven't noticed by now, I have a bit of a crush on the Yeti line brought to us by Great Divide, and the Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti is perhaps my favorite of the beasts. It pours a deep black with an elegant halo of mahogany bubbles. The nose is decadent with aromas of oak, chocolate, raisins, and vanilla. The mouth feel is rich and round and the finish is quite sticky. The alcohol is hidden incredibly well but it certainly sneaks up on you, so be cautious. But otherwise, enjoy! Cheers! - Cody

Green Flash Palate Wrecker 9.5% A.B.V.

Green Flash has always done a wonderful job producing tasty and interesting beers and Palate Wrecker is yet another treat for your mouth hole. However, before I get into my adorable little review for this weeks offering I must warn you, Palate Wrecker is not for the faint of heart. I'm serious this thing should come with a warning. That being said, let us continue. Palate Wrecker pours a vibrant shade of copper that is beautifully transparent and topped off with an elegant film of off white bubbles. The aroma of hops rush directly up the nostrils and into the brain, leaving behind notes of grapefruit, cracked white pepper, pine, and caramel. The mouth feel is sticky and intense, but after you pry your mouth open and scrape the hop residue from your tongue it's incredibly enjoyable. As a side note the alcohol is masked incredibly well so approach this monster with caution. Good luck! - Cody

Rogue John John Ale 8.2% A.B.V.

Rogue Brewing does just about whatever they want. They are proud growers of their own ingredients and they make some mighty fine spirits. Their John John Ale is a collaborative effort between brewmaster and spirits master, and is a celebration of everything they are capable of. This brew is beautiful top to bottom. It has a lovely auburn/honey color with a magnificent layer of off white foam, and the head retention is amazing. The nose is sweet with notes of cinnamon, sugar, peach cobbler and vanilla. The mouth feel is surprisingly creamy with less carbonation than you’d expect, and a finish that is plush and lengthy. Whiskey lingers ever so slightly in the back of the throat and the slight burn of alcohol soothes the esophagus on its way down. It’s quite a brilliant beverage, don’t miss out. Cheers!-Cody

The nose is overwhelmingly satisfying with notes of dark chocolate, caramel, toasted pecans, plums, bananas, cinnamon and bourbon. Belgian yeast is crisp on the palate but toasted malts add a dry and bitter layer. Chocolate and alcohol linger in the back of the throat for a lengthy and decadent finish.
