Adrian’s Wine of the Week 12.26.2018

Consortium – Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Happy Holidays everyone!  It’s time to treat yourselves to a delicious bottle of wine made by a supergroup of California wine industry friends including four winemakers, one master sommelier, and two wine industry execs.  They called themselves Band of Vintners and set out to make the best Cab in the price range that delivers at a much higher level.  I believe they succeeded!  Their insider connections helped them secure fruit from Napa’s great vineyards, so they were able to start right away with great raw material.  The  blend is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2016 was a great vintage to be making Cabernet based wines.  It leads off with dark and ripe fruit on the nose with hints of oak and transitions to red fruit on the palate mixed with hints of fleshy plum.  Also look for floral hints, touches of vanilla, tobacco and baking spices that round the wine out nicely.  The fine tannic structure is soft but persistent and well balanced, making it a delicious wine for now or for ageing over the next several years.  If you’re looking for a great bang for the buck, this is your wine!  Cheers!
